@4WHY WERE BOTH PILOTS KEPT?
==========================
I'm not exactly sure why they kept it in the first place but what I do know is
that it was discovered in the archives of The British Film Institute (as were
the recent batch of recently dicovered `missing' episodes of Steptoe and Son.)
The copy is also remarkably clean compared to the actual pilot's footage. My
BBC producer friend tells me this is because the film hasn't been viewed as
often as the real pilot has over the years.
I'm *only* guessing here... but I wonder if the BFI had some sort of
arrangement with the BBC, in the 60's, to take unwanted bits of film off their
hands and store them for posterity... Although I don't know for sure, that
*seems* to be what happened with the `missing' Steptoes. It looks like the
Steptoe and Son Appreciation Society got in touch with the BFI and asked them
to have a good dig around their vaults and they came up with a half-dozen or
so `lost' gems in their entirety.
Of course the people at the BBC who are looking for missing Who episodes will
have already checked with the BFI to see if they have any of them... yes of
course they would have done... surely they would have done. Wouldn't they???
Be Seeing You...
